Neil Walton took first place in the 2010 Sligo Triathlon with a comfortable win over Galways Marc O Duffy. First local lady was Caoimhe Ni Mhurucu who took third spot in the ladies section of the race, just four minutes behind the winner of that section, Trudy Brown. The event was successful one for the local Sligo Triathlon Club, with seven members finishing inside the top twenty; including Gary Higgins, Eamonn Mc Andrew and Sean Flannery who all finished inside the top ten overall. Taking place on one of the busiest weekends for events in the county the race managed to attract a large crowd of spectators to the finish at Rosses Point beach. Close to three hundred competitors took to the water on Saturday morning, with 254 finishing the 750m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run. !

The swim took place in slightly choppy conditions, with the fastest swimmers taking just over eleven minutes to swim the 750 metres from the second beach to the slipway on the first beach. The bike course took competitors out to Rathcormac and back via Scotsmans walk, with the wind proving an added test to the race. This section of the course allowed local Eire Og cyclist Michael Devins of team Bruss to establish a winning margin for that team in the relay section. The race finished with a 5k lap of Rosses Point village, finishing up at a specially constructed gantry above the beach car park.

The filed had a strong contingent of local competitors, with Sligo Triathlon Club members Niall Melvin, Martha van der Mulen, Gary Higgins and Mick Walton taking the top spot in their age groups. The race was in keeping with the strong tradition of triathlon in the county, with locals making up a large proportion of the field, probably more so than at any time in the sports history. If anyone would like to have a go at the event next year there is a smaller beginners event set for October, which involves ten lengths of the Regional Sports Complex pool, a 10k cycle and 4k run. Many of the people who entered that event last year went on to compete in the full triathlon on Saturday (including age group winner Martha van der Mulen). The club is extremely grateful to all the businesses and volunteers who supported the event and made it possible.
